Introduction
The period of undergraduate medical training is fully packed with extensive load of information and skills that needs to be learned by the medical students. The curriculum has little room for flexibility or choice for the student during their entire duration of the training. This necessitates planning of elective courses within the curriculum to give liberty to the students to opt for their preferences that suits their career likings. The number of electives will depend on the available logistics and other administrative or faculty support.
Scope of Electives Courses
The provision of elective courses in undergraduate studies fosters self-directed learning as these courses are opted by students on their own. This student-centered aspect of the curriculum inculcates active responsibility of learning. In general, these small duration courses can cover the fields of research, education, community postings, or other specialty-specific courses (namely, laboratory electives, palliative care, neurology, and emergency medicine).
